friends

Rosco wasn't sure if he believed his eyes when he walked downstairs to the basement. Carrie obviously had more than just a bed. There was a coffee table, a plush pink love seat, a TV with an entertainment center, lamps, even a little black kitchen table with chairs.

She had dishes too. Square ones. Even art on the wall.

"Jesus Christ! What have you done?" He looked around. Even fresh towels in the bathroom.

"Don't you like it?" She was making dinner, and it smelled of a spicy stir fry. She even had her own rice cooker.

"What? What is going on?" He squinted.

"Please don't tell me you're scared. I didn't mean to scare you. I didn't. I really needed some place to go. I was a door mat there. It was not good, you understand I had too. I had to come and stay. I didn't have any other place to go." She shoved a spoon of vegetables in brown sauce in his mouth to try.

It was hot and spicy. It cleared his sinuses immediately. He tried to clear his throat as he ate, but it burned.

"You should wash it down with something." She handed him a glass of red wine then.

He coughed even more. He had to sit down. She sat down next to him on the couch.

"It just kept calling out to me, you know." She pressed her lips together. "It really wanted to be a home, and it can be now."

"This shouldn't be happening," Rosco was still in shock.

"You'll learn to love it, you will." She held his hand then and smiled. "I won't let anything bad happen to you. I promise. I don't bite. I don't stab people, you know."

"What kind of people have you been living with?"

"My Mom stabbed my step-dad with a butcher knife," she sighed, "And then he married her."

"Are they still together?"

"She found somebody better, but I'm not like my mother." She looked him straight in the eye and smiled.

"I don't know, maybe I should go." He'd just let Gordy's mother know he'd found a renter and move back home.

"No, no I don't want you to go," she winced tugging at his hand harder. "I won't let you go."

"Carrie, you don't even know me," Rosco told her.

"Yes, I do," Carrie said. "You're in love someone who's like a sickness. You need me. You do. And I need you too. And I like that we're friends."

Friends. Rosco nodded. Yeah, they were friends.

That must have been a shock for Rosco to find the basement like that. Carrie does sound interesting, though.
