the silence

Carrie got another call with no answer.

She sighed then.

"What is it?" Rosco asked. They were over at his mother's for dinner with Kal. It was an actual home-cooked meal. Carrie was shocked. Carrie always heard his mother was a bad cook. She wasn't expecting much.

"Nothing," but it was the third time Derrick had called her. Still he never talked. She didn't understand it. It wasn't like him. He was pretty much history. It had been so stupid. She didn't know what she was getting into. Truth be told, she'd only wanted to use him then, but then she liked him. If only for a little while. And by then, he'd have nothing to do with her. She had meant nothing to him. But still what would he want from her now?

It gave way to a quiver of emotion that stung her from within. She didn't see how she could make it through this dinner.

And then Kal showed up.

Carrie thought her hearing might be going. Completely.

Shit. She'd slept with Kal, but did he remember? Maybe he didn't. It was awhile ago. And she was pretty much a groupie then trying some way to get in, make herself known, perhaps available. It was a time she wished to forget. And the more Kal stared at her, she hoped he forgot.

"Mom, the roast beef is perfect," Rosco was all sincere and maybe too much of a little boy for Carrie to cope with at the moment, especially from the stare Kal was giving her.

Carrie wanted to stay in the bathroom and chew her nails to the quick. This would be completely impossible. She took one bite of the mashed potatoes and gravy and it sent her right out the back door to the screened in porch.

"Whats the matter?" Kal asked Rosco.

"Beats me." Rosco went back to eating.

Carrie just wanted some fresh air. But even out on the screened in porch there was no wind. It was completely muggy. She began to sweat.

She wished this could be different. She wished she could be different. Would it ever change?

She hit redial.

"Hello." It was Derrick.

"Why won't you talk to me?"

"Because I can't think of anything to say."

"Then maybe we don't have to talk."

There was a silence then. But Carrie waited staring at a grassy lawn that she was sure she'd never stare at again.

"OK. What do you have in mind?"

"I could meet you after the show at the Whitfield tonight."

"K."

She clicked off then. Went back in and faced the meal. She looked at Rosco. It wouldn't be long til he was back home. She understood that, but she kept her eyes on her plate. She wouldn't dare look at Kal. As long as she didn't look at him, she was sure that memory would fade.
