mother load

Gordy was washing the sticky stuff off Rachel's necklace. It was a menagerie of silver charms, along with a ring that said faith, love and hope engraved on it. She'd spilled most of her fried pie from KFC on it and on her while having lunch with him on her break.

"Are you sure its nothing else?" He asked from the bathroom.

She was practically bundled up in a ball on the living-room couch.

"Its nothing." She gave him a look that it was evidently something.

"You're feeling all right, right?" Gordy thought she looked her normal self.

"Yes." She was sour to the world though. She gritted a sigh. "I get the impression they don't want me to be the young adult librarian." She huffed.

"How do you know that?" Gordy wondered what she was getting at as he plopped down next to her on the couch and did his best to stretch her out a bit before she had to go back to work.

"Well," She took the hint and put her feet in his lap. "They don't like the idea that I'm pregnant and not married. Something about it gives the wrong 'idea' to teenagers."

"They can't fire you." Gordy winced, shaking his head.

"God, I hate this. This is not what I need right now." She frowned. "I have my insurance. I've got it all taken care of and now, I'm a bad role model."

"Its not like we're not going to get married. We were going to wait. I wanted to get all the pharmacy school stuff out of the way." Which Gordy now thought would take an eternity.

"I know." She shrugged. "I'm OK with it. Really. Its not a problem."

"Well, don't listen to them. That's private stuff. They shouldn't even be bringing it up." Gordy nodded.

But still she was the mother to his unborn child and pretty much a Mom to Jane too. None of this excluded him from Mother's day. This might be the perfect opportunity to add an engagement ring to her charm collection on her necklace. He slipped it into his pocket then. It seemed she was too worried to notice.

I was so busy thinking about how so many great couples with kids aren't married, that it didn't occur to me that Gordy was actually going to propose. Way to go, Gordy!

Okay, first of all, sorry for not keeping up with the story lately. I'm a bit lost, but it's nice that Gordy is planning to propose. I wonder if he's planning something special...

Wishing you a wonderful mother's day with all of your family. Thanks so much for the note. Sometimes, I think some couples do better without marriage.
