wake up call

Bella wanted her Mom to make it all better, but there was her guest in the way.

"Who's that?"

"That's Dan." Her mom sighed. "He's going through something and uh, he's staying here for a little while."

"Staying here?" That didn't help Bella. "Well, get rid of him."

"Believe me, I want to." She nodded.

"Can you take Gib for awhile?" Bella then said. They were in the kitchen. Her mother was trying to get dinner in the skillet.

"Why?" Her mother looked at her as if her answer was NO.

"I dunno what to do, Mom." She let it out then. Tears and all. Holding on to Gib as if he was the only one who truly knew her and loved her.

"What did you do this time?" Her Mom went on to chop the rest of the red pepper up.

"I never knew until today how much Gordy really hates me." Bella told her.

"What? You didn't think he was over you?" Her mother looked up at her.

"I just thought, some day he'd, you know, be there for me. We might be really old, but we would- you know."

"What about Fish?"

"Well, if he wasn't around." She shrugged.

"But he's with you." Her mother looked at her seriously.

"I love Fish. I just thought Gordy would always love me. No matter what."

"You're so young, aren't you? Wake up and smell the coffee, sweetie." Her Mom sighed.

"He says I'm mean to Kal. He's taking up for him. Can you believe that?" Bella shook her head. She frowned so.

"Why is he on Kal's side? I thought he hated him just as much. Because of you."

"Evidently, blood is thicker than water." Bella sighed. "He says I want too much money from Kal for Gib and that maybe he should ask me for child support."

"I thought you only did that because Fish couldn't get a job. Actually, I wasn't sure if Fish really worked." She sighed.

"Its all your fault, Mom." Bella scowled. "You were the one who made me do it."

"I didn't make you do anything. Do you remember, I was going through a divorce, then? I was only wanting you to look up for yourself. Finding a man is a very complicated thing, you know. But you, you just think you can live on love, but you can't. You really can't B."

"What am I suppose to do?" Bella bit her bottom lip. "I can't just not ask for child support from Kal. He owes me."

"He owes Gib. Remember that. And you have to let him actually have him every other weekend he's suppose to have him?"

"I don't remember." Her lashes fluttered as if she were innocent. "He got him when we went to Chicago."

"And are you still seeing Jane, at least once month?"

"I just saw her." Bella told her.

"What? Five minutes? Bella, you don't know how easy you have it. And how many lives do you make miserable on a daily basis?" Her mother turned from her and started the stir-fry.

"Fine." Bella knew she wasn't going to get any sympathy here.

Thank God Kat isn't enabling Bella on this one, and set her straight. Bella's a smart girl, I think she'll do the right thing.

Dan needs to go home.
