and so

Fish was giving Bella the silent treatment, lately. Her mother was coming and she was going home. Or so she said. She didn't want to. She liked living here. Away from all the crap that came from living at home.

Bella knew it wasn't a terrible place, but it could be. It so could be. There was Jane to think about. She knew she had to do this. She needed to go home and see her daughter because what if she never did. What if she never saw her again?

This was all Bella talked about. Fish could only listen.

He saw that it gave her cold chills thinking it. How had she stayed away so long? How was she ever going to make this better instead of worse? Questions he couldn't answer for her.

"I want you to come home with me." She touched Fish's shoulders. His arms. He pulled away. He wouldn't dare let her know anything. There was no cause for him to leave his comfort zone. This silent treatment was all he knew. It was if it was the behavior he'd come to know over the years when bad grades arrived, conflicts with his Mom and step-dad, even ending relationships. This was the way it was done. A slight fizzle. Then nothing.

"All right," Bella hugged herself, looking back at her plastic garbage bag of clothes. "I guess this is it."

"How can this be it?" Fish's voice was about to crack. "She's not even here yet."

"But she will be." Bella was rather adamant about that. She rubbed her stomach. Fish stared at her then the stomach. He fidgeted slightly with a sigh and kept his arms crossed.

A knock came to the door.

Both Bella and Fish stared at each other. Finally, Fish went to answer the door. Only it wasn't Bella's mother. It was Kal.

Now Bella shut down. Fish was left to fend for himself.

"Uh?" Fish couldn't think. Fish wanted to close the door on Kal's foot, but he saw the way Kal looked at Bella, all concerned and a little sad. "I guess I'll go get some food. I guess you two need to talk." That was his exit. Fish was sure it was the end once he shut the door.
