after all this time

Andy had came to see Lucy the day after Thanksgiving. Rachel knew she had to be pleased about this when really she wasn't.

It had been on her mind for some time. It had been quite a while since he'd seen her, and she knew his Mom had been bugging her quite some time about when was she ever going to let Lucy stay with them.

Honestly, there was just too much going on. It didn't help that every-time Lucy was suppose to do something with them that Jane wanted to go too. Granted, she liked how protective Jane was, but this usually ended up being more of a bossy Jane than anything.

"Now, you have to let Lucy see her Dad." Rachel tried to lay down the law as nice as she could. "You can't just butt into everything." She knew how Jane was around relatives. She'd step in. Finish Lucy's sentences for her. Of course, Lucy didn't seem to mind at all. "He's going to take her back to her grandmother's house, and you can't want to go."

"Maybe I should go see my new sister." Jane just looked up at her with her arms crossed.

"Maybe you should." So she did so they wouldn't have Jane around during Andy's visit.

But naturally Andy asked about Jane as soon as he got there. As it was, every picture she sent of Lucy had Jane in it too.

"She went to see her new little sister." Rachel was pleasant about it.

"I'm her old sister." Lucy looked at him as if she were some sort of has been.

Andy just smiled and touched her nose, but she shied away, and Rachel had to push her right back to see her dad who wasn't in his Army uniform at the moment. Of course, Lucy resisted. Rachel didn't know what to do about it. Really, she wished Jane was here to take care of this.

"You know we talked about this." She finally took her back to the kitchen.

She got a nod out of Lucy.

"You have to be brave." She told her. But Lucy's eyes swelled with tears and Rachel thought she might cry herself.

Just then Gordy came home from dropping off Jane at Bella's, Lucy took off running, grabbing him around the legs. "Daddy! Daddy! Daddy!" She clung on to him so tightly.

Rachel looked at Gordy as if he'd have to do something. He picked up Lucy as if everything would be OK. She looked at Andy then a bit worried.

"Well," he shrugged as if he was ready to give up.

"No, no, I'll go with you. I know you really want some time with her." Gordy told him. "We'll both go with you, right Lucy?"

Rachel didn't know what to say. This was the last thing she was expecting. Some time, by herself.

Andy has to spend regular time with Lucy to win her heart; 2 or 3 times a week. Nothing's worse to a kid than a parent who gives up on them. No matter how wonderful Gordy is, Lucy would always wonder what she had done wrong to push her real father away. Andy needs to stop thinking about himself and consider the long term affect on his daughter.

Thanks so much for your note, Diane. Well, Andy started out being based on a friend of mine, who thought he had everything figured out with his life, like being a marine...then he decided no way. So he ran away from home. I remember the last thing he said to me when he left.."you're getting fat..are you sure you're not pregnant.." The next thing I know..he's with some girl he barely knew who was pregnant. They did get married, but it flaundered and well..their outcome is quite different from Andy's...but like so many I went to high school with are going off to the military and well..this is some of the stuff I see my friends going through.

Honestly, its so sad the stories I hear about what kids have to go through with parents they don't really know. And it is terrible when their granparents don't get to be with them, either.

aw, I do feel so sad for Lucy. Hopefully, it won't be bad news completely. But when I think what happened to that little girl a couple of weeks ago having to stay with a parent she hardly knew. You never know.
